Geography
Where is Florida?

Florida is a peninsula located in between the Gulf of America, the Atlantic Ocean and the Straits of Florida.
Climate
Florida's climate ranges from humid subtropical in the north and center to tropical in the south.
Florida's northern and central regions experience hot summers with lots of thunderstorms and mild to cool winters with the potential for frost inland.
In comparison, the Florida Keys and southern Florida experience a warm climate with small temperature variations and little frost throughout the year. During the wet season from May to October, there are almost always thunderstorms in the afternoon and there's also more humidity.
The dry season, which lasts from November to April, is characterized by lower humidity and colder nighttime temperatures. Florida is also prone to hurricanes and tropical storms, particularly during the official hurricane season, which happens from June 1 to November 30.
Here’s a rough breakdown of average temperatures:
| Region | Summer Highs | Winter Lows |
|---|---|---|
| North Florida | 90°F (32°C) | 40°F (4°C) |
| Central Florida | 92°F (33°C) | 50°F (10°C) |
| South Florida | 90°F (32°C) | 60°F (16°C) |
Florida’s warm, sunny weather draws in tourists and retired people, but its residents must also be prepared for intense heat, storms, and high humidity.
